From October 28 to 31, 2024, Almaty, Kazakhstan, became a hub for climate education, hosting three major international events under the Climate Box program, led by the UNDP Regional Bureau for Eastern Europe and Central Asia in partnership with UNDP Kazakhstan:
- International Teachers’ Conference
- International Schoolchildren’s Festival
- International Climate School
More than 100 participants—including schoolchildren, educators, and climate experts from nine countries (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan)—came together to exchange experiences and promote climate education and action.
The Teachers’ Conference provided educators with a platform to explore innovative methods for integrating climate topics into school curricula. Through panel discussions, workshops, and collaborative sessions, participants shared best practices and strategies to enhance climate awareness in classrooms. Representatives of Ministries of Education also contributed to discussions on incorporating climate education into national policies and institutional frameworks.
At the same time, the Schoolchildren’s Festival celebrated youth-led climate initiatives and fostered collaboration among more than 30 young participants from across the region. Students showcased their creative and impactful projects addressing climate challenges, exchanged ideas with peers, and gained fresh perspectives on environmental sustainability.
The Climate School offered an interactive and immersive learning experience, helping students deepen their understanding of climate issues through hands-on activities, masterclasses, quizzes, and games. The program encouraged teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving, equipping students with the skills to become the climate leaders of tomorrow.
With a strong focus on empowering the next generation, these events underscored the vital role of education in driving climate action and sustainability.
